Für die nächste Version des Webbrowsers haben sich die Mozilla-Entwickler zwar  wieder reichlich spannende Neuerungen einfallen lassen.

Wesentlich dabei ist aber, dass offene Internet Standards, wie HTML5, CSS3, oder sogar patentfreie Videostandards unterstützt werden.

    Mozilla mit Projekten wie Firefox 3.5 bereitet den Weg mehr und mehr in Richtung neuer Internet Standards vor. Dabei liegt ein deutlicher Fokus auf HTML5, CSS3 (Cascading Style Sheets), SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), ECMA-Script (Java Script).

    Patentfreie Videocodecs stellen neben freien Protokollen für Anwendungen eine Basis für unabhängige Entwicklung von Internet-Anwendungen mit Freier Software und unabhängiger IT Unternehmen ohne Tausende Patente im Tauschportfolio dar.

    Microsoft wurde Oktober 2009 zu einer Patentstrafe von 500 Mio Euro verurteilt, weil der Internet Explorer Videos auf einer Website abspielen kann. Mozilla Firefox ist von diesem Patent ebenso betroffen, wie alle Unternehmen, die Software für das Internet anbieten.

    Aus diesem Grund integriert Mozilla nur Standards die weitestgehend patentfrei sind und unabhängigen OpenSource Anbietern eine Plattform für Eigenentwicklungen bieten.
